Subway Album Review #4 Bully
The following is based on a true story: I saw a list of “the best new artists of 2015” and questioned the validity of that headline.
#4 Bully - Feels Like
This album kicks off with an incredible achievement in shout-singing. Drums drive it forward, guitars are dirty bordering on filthy, bass is thumping along with that fantastic tone of a hyperactive bullfrog, and the timing is all tight, but it’s really the vocals that push these poppy rock numbers to the next level. A venus flytrap, sugar-coated motor oil, a bouquet tied up with a barbed wire bow, the unlikely offspring of Sheryl Crow and Brody Dalle - the metaphors and descriptors are busting into my brain faster than I can jot them down, mostly pretty bad and nonsensical, but I don’t give a hoot, I’m rocking out!
And then I start to wonder if a human being is capable of keeping up this kind of throat abuse over the long term, or if the band will have to reinvent itself in a few years. I then also start to wonder why it is that I would find a person hollering at me like this absolutely unbearable in real life, but through headphones, these vocal razor blades are candy coated and delicious.
TL;DR Kicks a lot of ass!
