Ben's SARS - Rae Sremmurd
The following is based on a trued story: now roughly 80% through the list of albums I set out to review, I am certainly no smarter than when I began.
Subway Album Review: Rae Sremmurd - SremmLife
Not only do I not know how to pronounce Rae Sremmurd, I also don't really know how to categorize their music. Broody slow burners, sing-songy rap and catchy hooks. Whatever you want to call it, it's struck a chord with the public at large; the video above has over 335 MILLION views! Discounting the two times I watched it, that's like... 335 MILLION other clicks. The youtube royalties alone are probably in the tens of dollars!
These guys have all the swagger and self-assuredness of youth (and they sound REALLY young), but they are occasionally bogged down by immaturity, as on "My X" aka wounded_male_pride.mp3. That song really stuck out to me. I wonder if they will look back on it with the same "I was in a dark place" attitude that strikes when you see your questionable mullet in your old high school yearbook. I digress. This album is pretty chill and has what can only be described as a pretty juicy mix. I think it'll be interesting to see what these guys come up with as they mature, musically and in general.
TL;DR Music intended for persons younger and cooler than I.
