Ben's SARS - Johanna Warren
The following is based on a true story: my initial blistering album review pace may be faltering, but I am no less committed to the cause!
Subway Album Review: Johanna Warren -nūmūn
Is that a harp on the first song or else just the world's clearest-sounding nylon string guitar? I cannot say, I am in a noisy subway, and a staggering beer-sweating dude is trying to tell me an amusing anecdote using words that keep getting lost somewhere between brain and mouth. But he is having a good time, and I am nodding earnestly so as to indicate that his story is every bit as good as he imagines it to be, and we share a chuckle as he exits the train and promptly initiates a loud incoherent conversation with persons unseen on the other side of the station.
I am relaxed. I am calm. This music is mostly just acoustic guitar and voice, but not really simplistic. The melodies are very pretty and, I imagine, quite difficult to sing. But like many people with a lot of talent (and shitloads of practice) she makes it seem easy, gliding across the scales with the mournful elegance of a ballerina whose lifelong partner has broken both legs and will never dance again.
I like this album, should probably give it another listen when I can pay more attention!
TL;DR It's good! Bonus points for being from Portland!
