Ben's SARS - Courtney Barnett

A hoodie crow pondering his existence

The following is based on a true story: Katja recommended I listen to this album, and I did it just because it has such a great title.

Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit

In case the album title or fact that Courtney Barnett is literally a clown in the video above didn't tip you off, this is an album that takes having a sense of humor quite seriously. Lyrics are the true star of this album: keen observations wrapped up in witty packages then delivered with aplomb. While the musical part of this somewhat of a side dish here, it's pretty solid to boot.

For me, another part of what makes this so enchanting is Courtney Barnett's accent, which is full of dipthongs I could never hope to reproduce accurately. At one point, a lyric about what I for a split-second thought to be "the lore of averages" made me start to think about how a familiar concept can be so transformed during transmission because of how differently people communicate. Just when I was on the verge of having some kind of philosophical breakthrough or enlightenment pertaining to human nature, she ropes me back in with "Envy is thin because it bites but never eats."

TL;DR It's good!
